Josh discovered the excitement of radio-controlled driving 20 years ago at the age of 11 when his father gave him his first electric vehicle – a Tamiya Frog. Since then he has honed his hobby driving skills and become an accomplished RC airplane and helicopter flyer.
It is only in the past three years that Josh has moved into serious competitive RC racing in electric and nitro off-road and oval. He was third in Expert Truggy in the 2010 Nor-Cal Nitro Series and won 2wd Open SCT at the 2011 Short Course Explosion at Delta RC.
Late in 2011 he emerged as one of the fastest Pro 4 SCT drivers in the region, winning both the Race For A Cure at Modesto RC Raceway and the Turkey Shootout at Outback Raceway.
His success continued into 2012, winning 4wd Expert Short Course at the Traction Raceway Showdown in Reno, the Motown Showdown in Modesto, and the North vs. Challenge in Madera, CA. He also was second in 17.5 Stock Buggy at the JConcepts Summer Indoor Nationals and second in 1/8 eBuggy at the North vs. South Challenge.
2013 has started in impressive fashion for O’Connell. He won the title in 4wd SCT against a strong field at the 4th Annual Outback Shootout in Chico and the NCVM Benefit Race at Rattlesnake Raceway in Redding, CA. He also took home the win in the final standings of 1/8 eBuggy at the Delta RC Electric Winter Series, while placing second in 17.5 Stock Buggy and 4wd SCT.
Josh enjoys freestyle stand-up jet skiing during the summer months. His four-year-old American Bully dog, Gyro, is a fan favorite at local tracks and can often be seen hanging underneath his pit table at races.
